70-year-old man arrested in connection with casino bomb scare

Submitted on Wed, 2009-04-22 12:49

A 70-year-old man was in custody Monday morning in connection with suspicious objects thought to be pipe bombs left in a parking garage at Detroit's Motor City Casino. Later, the objects were determined to be fakes, none contained explosives, but at least two were blown up by bomb squads.

According to Chief James Tate, the man was arrested at about 1 a.m. at his home without incident. Tate said the man has not said why he allegedly left the four packages.

A video shows the man "get inside his vehicle, as well as exit the interior of the casino into the garage," Tate said. "He's also seen on surveillance dropping off various objects".

The four-story garage was closed for about six hours, the casinos continued to operate during the investigation though, with customers allowed to leave or enter via the front entrance.
