Plans have been filed for a new Hotel-Casino in downtown Las Vegas
Plans have recently been filed for a new hotel-casino in Las Vegas' Union Park.
If approved, the 47-story gambling destination will be the first new casino in downtown Las Vegas since 1979.
Forest City, the development company behind the project, hopes to build the new property on a 6.4-acre site in the Union Park development west of downtown. The new resort would be 1.6 million square feet, with 120,000 square feet of casino space and 1,000 hotel rooms, as well as a restaurant, meeting rooms, and a spa and health club. A city fire station would also be on the site.
Before the project is undertaken, however, Forest City must first build a new city hall in exchange for the land. The agreement-construction of a new city hall in order to obtain requisite city building permits-is an attempt on the part of Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman to create more than 13,000 much needed jobs. The debt incurred for building a new city hall has been estimated to be $150 million to $267 million. Despite the cost, city officials hope city hall construction will start within the year.
