Lake Tahoe
At an incredible depth of 1,645 feet (501 metres), Lake Tahoe prides itself on being the second deepest lake in the USA. Only Crater Lake in the State of Oregon is deeper (1,996 feet (608 metres). Approximately 65 per cent of Lake Tahoe's shoreline lies on the California side. Although nestled amid the natural splendour of breathtaking panoramas, first-time visitors are frequently taken aback by all the action from the countless casinos, stores, bars, marinas, and vacation homes.
Lake Tahoe's Beginnings
It was during the middle of the 1950's that hotels and gambling casinos began to cropping up on Nevada's side of the border. Playing host to the 1960 Squaw Valley Olympics required the building of a new highway, which subsequently resulted in an extraordinary influx of visitors and significant economic expansion.
Some 50% of all visitors to Lake Tahoe journey there to sightsee, fish, hike, camp out, as well as boating. The other half head straight for the Nevada side for exciting casino action, well-priced dining, and entertainment featuring some of the biggest names in show business.
