Student launches free online lottery powered by Twitter
Submitted on Wed, 2009-10-21 04:00A 23-year-old student from Mount Royal University in Canada has set up a free online lottery with real cash prizes. The lottery, found at thetwitterlotto.com, will have a jackpot that increases as more people visit the Web site and follow it on Twitter.
Peter Danihel began the idea as a university project, but after it started to grow in popularity he decided to see how far he could take it. The current jackpot has now passed the $1,000 mark, and Danihel has already revealed that he might take a 10 percent cut of the total.
The jackpot is paid for exclusively by advertisers on the site, and it has already attracted big names such as PartyPoker. The draw will take place on Christmas Day, although no one knows how big the jackpot will be by then.
Danihel claimed that he is running the lottery “because I want employers to look at me and take me serious and see that I can build something from the ground up.” He also said that it was a “win-win” situation because people get to play for free, and advertisers get traffic.
