Players Finding Ways Around US Gambling Prohibition

Submitted on Wed, 2006-12-20 10:38Despite the recent passing of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA) in the US this past fall, Internet gambling enthusiasts are discovering alternative ways to continue wagering online.

The Act is intended to disrupt financial transactions between US-based players and the online gaming websites they patronize. However, according to Frank Catania, a former New Jersey gaming regulator, "If you send a check in, you will be fine. There is no way it is going to stop." Other experts concur that it is unlikely the Federal Reserve will be able to force banks to monitor personal checks and other payment methods which are harder to track.

A recent article in the publication Techworld goes on to say that players betting over the Internet will not be subject to criminal prosecution under the federal act because it does not specifically outlaw online gambling. What it does is require banks and other financial institutions to obstruct credit card payments to gambling websites. The article does point out, however, that in a few US states, state laws still consider wagering over the Internet unlawful.

In an effort to promote lifting the prohibition on online gaming, the Poker Players Alliance is hoping to mobilize the 23 million US online card players into an effective lobby.
