Poker Player Alliance Fights Back Against Online Casino Ban
One online gambling group isn't going down without a fight. In an effort to make waves against the ban affecting the online casino industry in the United States, the Poker Players Alliance (PPA) has mobilized more than a million members to fight back.
A 2006 bill passed by Congress outlawed payment processors from transferring money between gamblers and online casinos, causing billions of dollars to be lost to the foreign online gambling market. Rather than eliminate the playing of online casino games, it has simply sent American players underground to gamble elsewhere. By creating a political action committee and a drive to register voters, the PPA hopes to overturn the ban or at the very least, make an exception for their game.
While it is unlikely that the Congress would overturn the online casino ban this year, the upcoming presidential election creates a new opportunity for change. With the World Series of Poker coming up in May, this gives the PPA a great chance to gain exposure and gain even more membership. Along with their voter drive, the group plans to recruit people to send emails to their Congressional representative.
PPA president John Pappas hopes to piggyback on the recent push by Congressmen Barney Frank and Ron Paul and hopes to raise a quarter of a million dollars this year alone for the new political action committee.
