Skill Games
As the huge phenomenon known as online gambling continues to take the cyber world by storm, another hot front is brewing and fast gaining momentum, only in a different sphere. The age of online skill games is here and things couldn't be more exciting!
Mind the Gaming Gap
So what exactly is the difference between regular gambling games and those classified as 'skill' games? Well, though a simple answer would probably suffice, you're out of luck. Because so many games are based on both luck and skill, to varying degrees, there is no definitive way to agree on clear distinctions. What is becoming increasingly evident is that the gap between what we call casino games and video games is closing, and fast.
Like casino games, poker, bingo and the infinite number of other 'gambling-related' pastimes, skill games are also played for real money by real people. However, unlike casino games where players often compete against the Dealer (or House), skill gamers often face off against other online players located around the corner or perhaps around world.
The Skill Games People Play
The number of skill games already drawing thousands - sorry, make that millions - of players to the skill-games market is impressive to say the least. The most popular skill games today include virtual golf, pool/billiards, backgammon, solitaire, and racing of various sorts. Generally speaking, these skill-based offerings typically incorporate adventure, sports and fighting-like themes for added entertainment value.
Skill games are said to be those in which the outcomes are determined primarily by physical or mental abilities, or both, as opposed to games that are totally dependant on pure luck. As such, a particular benefit often cited by skill game enthusiasts is that the challenges presented by the various game developers are an excellent platform on which players can explore their own capabilities and test their limits.
Just as those games based predominantly on chance also require some elements of one's adeptness, conversely, good fortune also plays a determining role in the outcome of these-so-called skill games, albeit to a lesser degree.
Poker: Skill Game or Luck?
Most people can agree that the outcomes of certain games are totally dependent on luck, be it the outcome of craps dice being tossed, the roulette ball landing on your number/colour, or being dealt the cards you need to build a winning hand. Other gambling games like online poker and blackjack - while still outlawed in a number of countries including Germany and the US - are considered games of skill. As such, a number of American poker advocates are proposing new legislation that will classify online poker as a 'skill game.' Doing so shall render wagering money on poker over the Internet legal by all definitions.
Considering the unprecedented popularity of these games, it's safe to say we're only on the frontiers of all the technological advances and excitement in store.
