UK Article Claims US Gambling Teeth “in Wrong Ass”

Submitted on Sun, 2006-11-19 11:53In an article published last week, Britain's The Register described the US's anti-online gambling law - the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act - as having its teeth ‘in the wrong ass.'

Sporting a wildly sarcastic tone, the article comments on how the new law will ensure that "those billions of dollars once spent on Internet gambling will now go towards recreation centers for children, programs caring for the elderly and humble decorations for Mother Teresa's grave. More importantly, those evil mega casinos that have emerged offshore will at last be swept from the Earth, like Sodom & Gomorrah."

Referencing the 1961 Wire Act and its ill-fated design to protect innocent victims from the effects of gambling, the author writes "the current amendment has nothing to do with the fear of organized crime, and more to do with stopping regular Joes from running up lots of credit card debt. The protected parties here are in fact those poor, waif-like credit card companies."

The piece goes on to illustrate the immediate effects of the recent legislation on publicly traded companies and nations engaged in offshore gambling, and explains how making the act of accepting money by online casinos a criminal offense frightens off only one kind of gambling enterprise: the legitimate sort that does not cheat.
