The difference between American & European-played roulette is zero, literally. European roulette wheels comprise 37 pockets numbered 1 through 36, plus a single zero, for a sum of 37. American roulette wheels, on the other hand, have 38 pockets; also numbers 1 through 36, along with a single zero, as well as a double zero, equaling a grand total of 38 pockets.

Another distinction between American & European roulette are the chips (or cheques) utilized for placing one's wagers. When buying in at a U.S. roulette table in an American casino, all players are given a stack of coloured chips/cheques so that his/her bets may be distinguishable from the chips on the table placed by other players.
