UK firms teaming up against US gambling ban

Submitted on Thu, 2007-05-31 12:01In a concerted effort to help push House Representative Barney Frank's legislation to license and regulate Internet gambling in the U.S. ¬- as opposed to banning it - two UK-based firms have allied themselves to jointly launch their Safe & Secure Internet Gambling Initiative.

Baker Tilly and the UC Group are embarking on a quest to increase public awareness in support of regulating Internet gambling.

"Millions of Americans are currently gambling on-line in an unregulated environment without any consumer protections," Jeffrey Sandman, the initiative's spokesman, is quoted as saying.

The group issued a press release recently indicating their intention to mobilize U.S. voters across the U.S. online to support Frank's "Internet Gambling Regulation & Enforcement Act of 2007" (IGREA).

Sandman also added, "Stringent licensing & regulations will protect American consumers & provide safeguards to protect against underage & compulsive gambling. Rep. Frank's bill is a big step in the right direction to limit government intervention that's futile and heavy handed."
